A trip to a grocery store can be a bit overwhelming. People are walking everywhere with big carts, and there are so many different foods to choose from. How can you make healthy food choices if those freshly baked donuts look so good?
The truth is that grocery shopping is an important part of eating a healthy diet because it is where we get a lot of our food. While we may eat out at restaurants every once in a while, most of the food we eat every day comes from the cabinets and refrigerators of our own homes.
Follow these simple steps to have a healthy grocery shopping trip:
- Do not shop when you are hungry! When you grocery shop while you are hungry you are more tempted to buy junk food or things you do not need.
- Make a list ahead of time. Make a list of the meals you want to have for the week. This will save you time, money, and will make your decisions easier.
- Shop on the walls of the grocery store. The healthiest food options (fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, low-fat dairy) are on the outer edges of the store. Look for whole-grain pastas and cereals in the center lanes, but skip the ones with potato chips, cookies, and other processed foods.
Have you changed the way you shop at the grocery store? How has it helped you and your family eat a healthier diet?
