Over the last few years, the number of online fitness sites and phone applications (called “apps”) dedicated to enhancing one’s personal fitness has skyrocketed.  Whatever your fitness flavor is, there is no doubt, an app or a website dedicated to delivering you the resources needed to help you reach your goals.  Whether you are a lone-ranger and prefer to do fitness activities on your own, or if you like being part of a group, there’s an app for that.

Many of the online communities offer free accounts, which usually come with advertisements.  While some sites charge a small one-time fee to purchase an app, some have an annual fee, which can range from $20 into the hundreds of dollars each year.  Most sites and apps deliver enough resources for free to avoid buying extras like an annual subscription, which unlocks additional resources and features.

Here are some reasons people enjoy using these sites and apps:

  • Fun – makes working out more like a game or challenge when you set goals and share your progress with others.
  • Accountability – serves as an interactive journal of your workouts. If you skip a few days, you’ll see it right there each time you log-on! Many sites also allow you to share your progress with friends.

Fun, accountability, and the experience of something new are all reasons why these new websites and apps are popping up all over the internet.  They add another dimension to working out.  By using these sites or apps, fitness is more personal by measuring how you are doing.  It’s also more accountable because most sites offer a way to track how often you’re working out along with what you are doing with your workouts.  One of the highlights with using these new ways to workout is that it also adds another way to keep fitness fun and challenging by setting goals for your self or as part of an online community.
